5 Reasons to Scrap New Years Resolutions for SMARTer Goals

According to an article on Forbes.com in 2013, only 8% of people actually achieve their New Years Resolutions. Shocking I know! (not really) I’m sure many of us know that most people don’t achieve their resolutions. But wait there’s more! I know you are thinking about some lame infomercial where they give you something better, you are right…kind of. Canadians did a little better in accomplishing their New Years Resolutions, according to the Star.com 19% of Canadians achieved their New Years Resolutions. The question is, what can you do to ensure that you achieve your New Years Resolutions. Here are 5 tips that will help.

  1. Scrap New Years Resolutions.

You are probably thinking to yourself, “ but Danny, you just said you were going to provide tips to achieve my resolutions.” Yes, there is some truth to that, however, I just told you only 8%-23% of people achieve their goals and I am sure you would agree that are not good odds. You want better odds of success, I mean I am you’re your resolutions are important to you. You need to scrap new years resolutions because when you postpone setting goals, you are usually not as committed, as you should be. By saying you will wait until January 1st to start something, you already set the mindset that it’s okay to wait, which eventually translates to starting off strong then gradually phasing out activity towards your goals.

  1. Set S.M.A.R.T (S) Goals

You may have heard about S.MA.R.T (S) Goals, the acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, attainable, Realistic, Time-bound, and Shared Goals. Setting S.M.A.R.T. (S) goals is a great way to make a commitment to yourself to achieve meaningful goals in your life. I am not 100% on board with the S.M.A.R.T (S) goals method because of the “attainable” and “realistic” steps, it is more of a question about what a person can achieve and is realistic. I believe people can achieve just about anything they commit to. However, many of my clients and I have used this method and have been successful in achieving life goals. It is important to be specific about what you want because when you are you create a vision of what success looks like, it also makes it more real as opposed to being general. Knowing what success looks like is important, how will you measure success? Making your goal attainable and realistic is more about taking action. You need to develop an action plan to ensure your success. Setting a time frame is important because, without it, your goal is just a dream. Lastly, you need to share your goals with loved ones and people you trust to hold you accountable. Using the S.M.A.R.T (S) Goals method will help you to be clear about your goals will help them to become more real. Try it out.

  1. Visually Speaking

This is not a big secret, however, I will say it anyway, highly successful people write their goals down, visualize them, and focus on committing to their goals. If you want to truly achieve the goals you have to commit in writing. Write them down; put them in a place that you see them every day. We all know then signing our name to something solidifies a commitment; your goals are no different. You must also visualize yourself accomplishing your goal, take time to think about what success looks like. It’s said that before Jim Carrey made it big in acting he wrote himself a cheque for $1 Million dollars and he carried it in his wallet until he actually landed his big movie payday. You do not necessarily have to do that, however, see yourself as a success and find visuals that will keep you focused on your goals. I use to have a photo of Italy on my phone as a screensaver as a reminder of my goal to travel to Italy, find something to remind you of your goals every day. Vision boards are also great reminders, set up a board with images of your goals somewhere in your home or office and you will find yourself taking action subconsciously because simply because you can see them every day.

  1. Celebrate Along the Way

Too many people lofty goals and wait until they complete them to celebrate, even then the celebration is usually a blip on the way to moving on to something else. Take time to celebrate small wins along the way. For instance, if you have a weight loss goal of losing 20 pounds, celebrate your weight loss on a weekly basis or every time you lose 5 pounds. You will establish a feeling of accomplishment and you will want to continue to recreate the feeling of celebrating over and over until you hit the huge milestone of completing your goal entirely.

  1. Think “Must” instead of “Should”

Tony Robbins says that in order to train your brain to will yourself into achieving lasting change in your life, you need to change your mindset from “you should” go after your goals to “you must” achieve your goals. That makes sense if you want to lose weight and you say “ I should go to the gym today” the likelihood if you missing the gym often is much greater. However, if you say “ I must go to the gym today” you confirm you’re committed to achieving your weight loss or weight gain goals. Change your mindset to “must” and think about what achieving your goal will give you.

Setting goals is the key to having more happiness and success in your life, new years resolutions are great, but it is more important to have a solid plan, commit to the plan, and have a support system to help you when you are struggling. Utilizing the SMART Goals method is one tool to help you shake off the new year’s resolution curse and establish a successful action plan.
