It’s no secret that setting goals is hard and achieving them is even more difficult. Many people don’t set goals or write them down because they don’t think they will achieve them. Setting goals and taking action is not as complicated as you may think.
1. Get Clear About Your Goals
2. Know Your Why
3. Write Them Down
4. Set a Deadline
5. Take Action Everyday
6. Get Support
7. Don’t Quit
I will break these down in more detail below.
Are your goals clear? Do you know exactly what you want? Do you have a clear image of what success looks like, sounds like, and feels like?
It is important to be clear about your goals. Be very specific about what you want.
Write out your goals; be as specific as possible about what success looks like. It’s important to do this because when you are clear about what you want you can start to take action towards it.
Having a clear understanding of what you want will also help you visualize achieving your goals and visualization will activate your subconscious mind. I’ll explain this in a minute.
Why do you want to achieve your specific goals?
It is important to start here. You have a big goal that you want to achieve, something you want, and something you often think about, the question is…Why do you want to achieve your goal?
What will achieving your goal allow you to do?
What problem will it eliminate for you?
How will it help you?
Take weight loss for example. When I was overweight I used to want to lose weight to feel stronger, be more energetic, and be more confident in myself. These were my “Whys” for losing weight.
Think of your goals and know your “why” for each of your goals. Take time to think about why you want to achieve your goals, understand your true motivations for success. Also think about how it connects to your values.
You done heard this many times. (Yes I said, “Done heard this”), it’s nothing new.
WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS.
It sounds so simple, however, less than 5% of people actually write down their goals.
Why so few?
Three words…Fear. Of. Commitment.
Yup, that’s what it is.
No, I’m not talking about giving a promise ring to a girl on the first date or even crazier her demanding one.
I’m talking about the fear to commit to you.
People are afraid to write down their goals because writing things on paper means commitment. It’s a contract.
And we all know how skeptical and weary we are of signing contracts.
That translates into our commitment to set goals and write them down.
If you want to set yourself up for success and you want to achieve your goals, you must WRITE THEM DOWN.
Let’s say this together, “I will write down my goals”
Ready, on the count of three, let’s say it together…
“I will write down my goals”
I know it’s a bit cheesy, but seriously, you really have to write your goals down if they are of importance to you.
As soon as you finish reading this blog post, go write down your goals.
You may have heard the quote “A goal without a deadline is a wish”
Not setting deadlines on your goals are a way to give yourself an “out” to not pursue them with fierce determination. If there are no deadlines on your goals they become wishes or dreams. They will fade into the background of your life.
In order to keep your goals present and to make sure you take action and set deadlines.
Think about it, when you have a deadline to get something done in your job or at school, what do you do?
You work hard toward ensuring that you get the work done by the deadline. If you are not successful for some reason, you are typically much closer to achieving the goal than if you did not have a deadline.
Set deadlines for your goals and work towards achieving them by the dates you choose.
Remember, you can always adjust your deadlines if things come up or if you need more time.
Be sure to set deadlines that challenge you, don’t allow yourself unreasonably long periods of time to achieve goals that could be completed in less time.
Challenge yourself to take action on what YOU want.
What tasks are you going to take on your goals every day? This is something that you need to know and write down.
There are little things that you can do every day towards your goals that will get you closer to success.
Maybe you can research your goal, connect with people who can help you, or physically take action.
For instance, when I set out to lose 30 pounds, I did something every day to get me close to my goals.
Some days I went to the gym and did a workout.
Other days I prepared healthy meals for the weeks.
There were days that I just watched YouTube videos on weightless, nutrition, and exercise.
Other days I talked to friends who were into fitness for advice and motivation to keep going.
There are things you can do every day to get you closer to achieving your goals; they can big MASSIVE action or smaller tasks.
Make a list of different activities that you can do every day
One of the biggest reasons that many people don’t achieve their goals is that they either surround themselves with negative people or they don’t have the right support system.
In my book, You Have the Keys, Now Drive I talk about having a “Life Support Network” a group of people that support you, build you up, and provide you with guidance and advice.
In order to knock out your goals, you need people to help you along the way. You need people to boost you up when you are discouraged or when you hit roadblocks.
They can be family members, friends, co-workers, coaches, and mentors.
I also tell people to make sure that these people have your best interest because you do not need people who will sabotage your progress.
Saboteurs are people that don’t believe in your goals and dreams; they are negative people that constantly tell you that you cannot do something. They put down your dreams and give you a thousand reasons why something is not possible.
Don’t tell those people your goals and dreams. They will bring you down.
You need to be very selective of who you share your goals with.
Tell people that you know will be happy to support you and hold you accountable.
If you do not have anyone like that in your life, get a coach or find a mentor. They will support you and provide you with guidance and support.
Think about your goals, who are people that you know will build you up and encourage you to achieve them.
Don’t quit! Don’t quit. Don’t quit!
Keep going with your goals. Don’t give up. Sometimes when it seems like you are nowhere to achieve your goals, you are actually closer than you think.
You may be closer than you think to get what you want without even knowing it.
Do not give up. Keep going, keep moving forward, take action, and just continue to walk in the direction of your goals.
You will get there. You will achieve your goals, don’t quit.
If you need to adjust, then adjust, but don’t quit.
You can achieve your goals. You have done it many times in the past and you can do it again.
Remember, tap into your Life Support Network if you need help or motivation.
We all know setting big goals is not easy. We know it is difficult to get what we want in life. However, if you have a plan, write it down, take action, have a support system, and you keep going, you will achieve amazing things in your life.
Remember, you are already a success. You have achieved your big goals in the past and you will do it again!
